About sage
Sage has been creating art since the moment he could hold a crayon. From an early age, his passion for drawing was clear, and he carried that love for visual expression throughout his school years. As a teenager, he was drawn to the bold, expressive world of graffiti and began painting large-scale murals across Los Angeles. While his outdoor art gained attention, he was also airbrushing at home—turning t-shirts, hoodies, and denim into custom streetwear with vibrant, graffiti- and hip hop-inspired designs.
By 19, Sage launched his first airbrushing business, producing thousands of hand-painted garments for clients across the city. His work was raw, powerful, and culturally resonant. But everything changed at age 22 when he was hired to paint a mural for a local tattoo shop. It was there that he discovered tattooing—and it was love at first sight.
Eager to learn, Sage began a rigorous, years-long apprenticeship. The moment he picked up a tattoo machine, he knew he had found his calling. Tattooing became his new canvas—another medium for his creativity, discipline, and relentless drive to master his craft.
Following the devastation of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Sage, his wife and their one year old son were displaced and left homeless. Seeking a new start, they relocated to Arizona. Not long after, Sage opened Urban Art Tattoo & Piercing in Mesa, a shop that would grow to become a staple in the local tattoo scene. Now, over 31 years later, Urban Art remains a respected, family-owned studio known for its high-quality work, creative energy, and welcoming environment.
Never one to stop learning, Sage expanded his artistic skill set once again in 2011 when he enrolled in an engraving class at the Mesa Arts Center. He immediately connected with the meticulous, hands-on nature of the craft and has been studying and refining his engraving skills ever since.
He also took additional engraving classes with Jeff Parke in his engraving studio. From intricate wedding commissions to custom jewelry pieces, his engraved work blends precision with personality. He sells his engraved pieces through Etsy, his personal website, and directly from his tattoo shop. Sage is an artist in the truest sense—constantly evolving, always creating, and forever dedicated to his craft.
